I am currently working as the lead teacher at the Montessori Learning Centre. My Montessori teaching credentials were earned through Montessori Teachers College in Toronto.

I started my career as a physiotherapist and was always interested in the physical and emotional development of children. While caring for my first child, I started to look after the children of my friends and neighbours. This sparked my interest in early child hood education, and soon evolved into starting my own day home. A few short years later, I happened to enroll my son in a Montessori preschool and was completely enthralled and inspired by the Montessori philosophy. That was when I decided to dedicate my work to the enrichment, learning and development of children in their youngest and most impressionable years.

My two young boys keep me very active and engaged. When I am not teaching I enjoy the outdoors, and can often be found travelling with my family. My other interests are listening to music and dancing, and staying fit with yoga and zumba. I find that a good cup of coffee is a great way to start and end the day.

My name is Jocelyn Taylor and I am so happy to be part of the fabulous teaching team at Montessori Learning Center.

I grew up in the Devonshire countryside in South West England, just a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean. My childhood was spent at the beach or walking along the cliffs; I have always been enthralled by the power of nature and there is nothing more invigorating than a wild and windy scramble along a jagged shoreline. I graduated from college with a diploma in Veterinary Nursing and consequently my life has always been full of animals. When I immigrated to Alberta with my husband and 2 young children in 2003, we were lucky enough to buy a small acreage NW of Cochrane where we still live, surrounded by the Foothills and all the wildlife it has to offer. We share our home with 2 Flatcoated Retrievers, 4 Red Rock hens and we have lambs arriving in the spring.

My interest in Early Childhood Education began when I had my own children and I started as a classroom assistant and special needs aid in a primary school where I was assigned 4 children with varying needs; autism, dyslexia and sensory integration disorders. So when we settled in Cochrane I was fortunate to find a teaching position in a Montessori preschool; a position that lasted for almost 14 years. It was here that I fell in love with the Montessori philosophies and methodology and after studying for 3 years graduated with an International Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy in 2009. Eventually, I became lead teacher, ran a music and movement class and an enriched kindergarten program. I firmly believe that it takes a village to raise a child, so with this in mind I worked diligently (and still do) at building up positive relationships with each of my students’ families, getting to know each family member who came to the school, and felt great satisfaction when younger siblings or cousins were enrolled in my class. It was an ultimate honour when a group of parents nominated me for a Teacher of Excellence Award in 2014. I have also trained Montessori classroom assistants and most recently was a supervising teacher to Montessori student teachers that came to the school for their teaching practicum.
Working with preschool age children in an authentic Montessori environment has become my passion: I love to see a child’s reaction when a new challenge has been mastered or when a new discovery has been made and I love to see their self confidence grow as they become independent learners and thinkers. I am dedicated to creating a quality early learning and child care environment for all children where I hope to instil a love of learning and respect for others and our environment. I look forward to getting to know the families and working with the children at Montessori Learning Center.
