What is Montessori?

Dr. Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952) was the founder of the Montessori Method of Education. Dr. Montessori worked extensively on developing a comprehensive model of psychological development from birth to age 24.  As well, she developed educational approaches for children aged 0–3, 3–6, and 6–12.

Through careful observations she developed a time tested method which fosters a love for learning in children. A specially prepared environment conducive to purposeful movement, exploration and discovery is required to facilitate maximum independent learning.

Under the guidance of a trained directress (teacher), children are shown how to work with the Montessori materials in an environment that fosters respect for everyone and everything.

Children have freedom within limits to choose and practice skills that:

  • Build concentration
  • Aid the child’s physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social development
  • Build self confidence, self esteem and a sense of responsibility
  • Develop self discipline

The Montessori method has been well received internationally and has become recognized for its developmental theory, educational practices and most importantly success with children.
